Harold
moved to the Bulahdelah property
permanently in 1998. Originally Myrtle occupied the house that Harold, his son Brian and several of Brian’s mates had
built in 1990 from a kit in six weeks. Myrtle died in 1995. The couple had
lived separately for many years, Myrtle preferred the country lifestyle while
Harold had a plumbing business which kept him busy in Ryde, a suburb of
Sydney. Harold made his
mark in Bulahdelah with his very active role in playing organ music at both
the Anglican and the Uniting Churches from time to time. Twice each month on
a Sunday Harold would visit the Great Lakes Nursing Home in Bulahdelah to
assist with a devotional Communion Service for the elderly residents. He was
more recently an active participant at the Boolambayte Christian Fellowship
which Kathy and Dave coordinate. Humble
Harold grew up in the depression years of 1930’s Anybody who knew Harold closely would
know that Harold never threw anything away that perhaps might be useful in
years to come. We are all a bit like that, but Harold was more so, a hoarder
of greater proportions. He kept many sizes and varieties of used plastic
containers, used plumbing fittings and recycled light tubes . His
granddaughter reported how during a kitchen refurbishment once the owners
were in need of a stainless steel sink, sure enough Harold had such an item
in the rear of his voluminous yellow Valiant Station Sedan, where he carried
a large stock of potentially useful items. Harold would
always consider others before himself. He did without many of life’s comforts
so that others in less fortunate circumstances might come to understand the
love of God for all people. Harold
has now moved to northern NSW. Harold has lived on his own for many
years, but there comes a time when it is appropriate to be close to family if
possible. Harold’s wife and children had all predeceased him, and his only
family of grandchildren were spread far and wide so when Harold had the
opportunity to move closer to one of his granddaughters he snapped at the
chance. Harold has
secured a newly constructed one bedroom unit in Murwillumbah NSW with all the
amenities one could wish for in hostel accommodation, including air
conditioning. The common room features a Wurlitzer organ which Harold is very
excited about using. The outlook from his room is towards Mt Warning in the
distance. |
