Most little girls don't think of radiography when they are going through the "when I grow up I want to be....." stage. They don't understand how x-rays work, or the many steps involved in obtaining diagnostic images. The concept of a "mammogram" is completely foreign to most of the population under 40.
I'm sure I didn't ever tell mum and dad that I wanted to squash breasts for a living! However that is the occupation I find myself in. After finishing a 3 year degree at the University of Newcastle, and completing a further 12 months practical training in general radiography I have this year decided to specialise in mammography. A little bit repetitive you might ask - and I would have to agree, but my workplace is clean and air-conditioned; all the clients are well; there are no screaming children; and I haven't had anyone collapse on me (yet!). A far cry from my work at the hospital last year.
Most importantly though, I am playing a vital role in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer - saving lives if you will...and that makes all the repetition in the world worthwhile!
